September 2019 District Newsletter

Dear North East District Family,

As you all are aware, Hurricane Dorian sat as a category 5 storm over the Bahamas for an extended period of time causing devastation to the Abacos and Grand Bahama Island. Presently, the U.S. Coast Guard and the British Royal Navy are conducting search and rescue operations for the many people who are missing.

As the Body of Christ, many are asking how our local churches can help the Bahamas in their recovery. Thank you! Reaching out to others in their times of worst need is core to the DNA of being Christians, as well as Methodists.

Our United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is already at work with our partners in the Bahamian Methodist Church and the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas. The recovery period will be long – most likely years. There will be a need for teams of volunteers, but not at the moment. We will wait until assessments can be made after the initial search and recovery is concluded.

For now, the best thing you can do is to give a donation to UMCOR’s International Disaster Recovery efforts. You can do so by clicking this link: https://advance.umcor.org/p-641-umcor-international-disaster-response-and-recovery.aspx. They will be making grants both to local disaster recovery efforts as well as have their own folks on the ground. In fact, they already are on the ground in the Bahamas.

The Florida Conference will be coordinating efforts through UMCOR and Bahamas Habitat (the relief ministry of the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church), and they will share with us other specific needs. Until they do so, however, the best thing we can do is give cash.

One thing I have learned over the years is not to be a part of what many disaster recovery experts call “the second disaster.” The “second disaster” is what they call well-intentioned folks who send “stuff” to areas after disasters. The people in those areas don’t have any real need for it, don’t have a way to store it, and the expensive shipping costs could go to help real needs if cash was given instead. Here is an excellent piece about the “second disaster” CBS News did a few years ago. It’s not long, and I highly recommend it to you: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/best-intentions-when-disaster-relief-brings-anything-but-relief/.

Thank you for being so caring for our sisters and brothers in the Bahamas! God bless you, district family!

All God’s love,
