Step 1: Put 4-5" cucumbers in a large container. Mix 2 cups salt into a gallon of boiling water and pour over cucumbers .Cool and leave on cucumbers for SEVEN DAYS, skimming each day as needed.
Step 2: Mix 1 gallon water with 1 tablespoon powdered alum. Pour over pickles after they have been drained of brine. Do this for 3 mornings using fresh solution each day.
Step 3: On the 4th day, drain pickles and cut in 1 inch chunks and cover with the following:
6 cups cider vinegar
2 cups sugar
1/3 cup pickling spices
1 tbsp. celery seed.
Boil the above and pour over cucumbers. On fifth day, repeat process, let cool.
Step 4: On the sixth day add 1 cup sugar to the drained vinegar. Boil and pour over the pickles again. Bring to a boil after pickles are added.
Seal while hot.
