Churches urged to pray for peace in Korea
August 07, 2015
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United Methodist General Board of Church & Society is encouraging local churches to pray this Sunday, Aug. 9, for the peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula. The World Council of Churches also has supported the observance.
"A Joint Prayer for a Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula" has been prepared by the National Council of Churches in Korea (South Korea) and the Korean Christian Federation Central Committee (North Korea). The prayer and an order of worship are to help congregations in the annual observance on the Sunday prior to Aug. 15 as a day of prayer for reunification.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonialism and also its division into two occupying zones, which subsequently led to the Korean War and animosities that have continued since then. The Peace Committee of Korean American Assembly of The United Methodist Church will visit North Korea Aug. 12-19 to participate in the anniversary celebration of the liberation of Korea.
