November 2018 District Newsletter

Message from the District Superintendent

Dear North East District Family,

Yes, I’m that guy…the one who starts playing Christmas music on November 1. I confess to you that I stayed up until midnight on October 31 just so I could hear the first song SiriusXM played on their all Christmas music channel called Traditions. Pray for Pam as she already has to hear Christmas music coming from my office!

I love Christmas music for many reasons. One of them is because of the nostalgia that I associate with it. It brings back memories of Christmases past when I couldn’t wait for Christmas morning. It also reminds me of getting to spend time in South Carolina with both of my grandmothers who were very special to me. Nostalgia can be a good thing.

If I’m being honest, however, nostalgia can also have a downside. Nostalgia in churches, in fact, can be quite negative. We pine for the way things were. We remember the good old days, and sometimes we even embellish those memories to make them sweeter. When we do that sometimes we get stuck in the idea of not wanting to do something new and different. Someone comes up with a new idea that would help move the mission of our faith community forward and yet we’re resistant because nostalgia has a strong pull to it.

When Israel was caught in exile and pining away for the good old days, God had a message for them through Isaiah 43:18-19, “Don’t remember the prior things; don’t ponder ancient history. Look! I’m doing a new thing; now it sprouts up; don’t you recognize it? I’m making a way in the desert, paths in the wilderness.” Also, when John writes of the new heaven and the new earth and what it will be like when Jesus returns he shared in Revelation 21:5, “Then the one seated on the throne said, ‘Look! I’m making all things new.’ He also said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” The point is that God is always up to something new! He doesn’t want us to get locked down in nostalgia.

The next time you’re tempted not to support a new ministry idea because either “we’ve never done it that way before” or it’s not like “the good old days,” let me challenge you not to give into paralyzing nostalgia. The Holy Spirit is doing something new in our midst. He’s challenging us to take the message of Jesus crucified and resurrected (a message that NEVER changes) to a new group of people and to do it in new ways and in new places. Let’s join the Holy Spirit where the Spirit is moving!

God bless you this November! As we think about things for which we are thankful, please know that I’m so very thankful to serve as your district superintendent. Now…back to Christmas music!

All God’s love,

 Jay Therrell, Superintendent
