JACKSONVILLE—San Marco Church, also known as Swaim UMC, was severely damaged by the winds and rains of Hurricane Irma. The congregation was not defeated by adversity. They rose to the challenge, undergoing renovations while maintaining outreach ministries to help the surrounding community.
Florida Conference Bishop Ken Carter and District Superintendent Jay Therrell visited the church during a Wednesday dinner with the homeless. Outside the church, a mobile shower was available through a church partnership with The WELL Jax.
"We can all tell a story about how God is using The United Methodist Church, if we have eyes to see," shared Bishop Carter on Facebook. "God is good."
During church renovations in February, the lighted cross on top of the church was turned back on. Social media described the brightly lit steeple as a symbol for shining the light of Christ into the San Marco Community.
