Inaugural 5k run nets $5,000 to fight malaria
LAKELAND – Equipped with good intentions, determination and advice about how to confront any alligators that might choose to join in, more than 200 people turned out for the Annual Conference 5k run/walk around Lake Hollingsworth early Thursday morning.
Neither rain nor gators showed up to plague participants, but Florida Bishop Ken Carter came out at dawn to pray with them and stayed to finish the course, said Rev. Sarah Miller, one of the event’s organizers.
“It was wonderful,” Miller said. “We raised 5k for 5k. … We are very confident this will be an annual tradition of Annual Conference.”
Miller said the event – a first for Florida’s Annual Conference -- exceeded the goal of raising $5,000 for Imagine No Malaria through application fees and donations. She was also pleased with participation.
“We had children of clergy. We had youth delegates. We had adult delegates, from young adult to older. It was a very age-inclusive event.”
