Beware of calls claiming UM bishops in distress
LAKELAND -- The Florida Conference has received word from The Council of Bishops that United Methodists associated with local churches and annual conferences are being targeted in a scam in which the perpetrators pretend to represent a Methodist bishop who needs money because of an emergency situation or disaster.
Apparently the scammers are using names of real bishops and other denomination information in order to sound legitimate, but don’t be fooled.
The Council of Bishops has stressed that no bishop would contact church or conference members with such a request. If people receive a call, email or Facebook message from someone claiming that a bishop needs money, they should not send funds. They should report any such calls to their church pastor or district office, who should report them to Mark Thomas, Ministry Protection director at the Florida Conference.
