Bishop Carter Announces Annual Conference Staff Leadership Changes, Addition to Cabinet

Conference News

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ in the Florida Conference,

We wanted to give you an update on some developments in a few key areas of our conference work:

Rini Hernandez
Rini Hernandez
Rev. Dr. Rini Hernandez, Director of New Church Development and Latino/a Ministries, will remain a part of our Cabinet but will also be appointed as the senior pastor of a local church. As a member of the Cabinet, he will focus his work on the continued development of our Latino/a Ministries. The specific local church Rini will serve will be named as part of announcement Sunday this weekend.

Candace Lewis

New Church Development pastors will receive their individual coaching from their respective district superintendent. Our conference-wide new church development work will be overseen by our Congregational Vitality committee with leadership by their cabinet liaison, Rev. Dr. Candace Lewis. Candace was formerly  the chief executive of our denominational work in new church development (Path 1) and started a church herself earlier in ministry. She will host regular conversation with NCD pastors and superintendents and ensure this important collaborative work continues.

Two of our districts (North  West and South West) will be led by district superintendents who  also have senior pastor responsibilities: Rev. Dr. Wayne Wiatt and Rev. Thom Shafer. Instead of adding additional staff, Janet Earls, Director of Congregational Vitality, will give one-third of her time supporting each district superintendent with their missional strategy. She will become a member of our Cabinet and will continue to provide leadership to our conference-wide vitality initiative while supporting the successful piloting of superintendents with dual roles.

Rev. June Edwards, superintendent of the North Central District, will also give oversight to the work of our Fresh Expressions staff and team. We now have hundreds of Fresh Expressions across Florida and are blessed by the staff leadership of Michael Beck, Heather Evans and Caitlin White as well the members of the advisory team.

Brittany J. Jackson
Brittany Jackson
Brittany Jackson became our Conference Communicator in March and has hit the ground running connecting our churches with COVID-19 resources. She will lead our website, social media, and communication strategy. Brittany brings nearly a decade of public relations and communications leadership experience from the community-based, governmental and non-profit sectors.

“I want to thank each of these gifted leaders,” Bishop Carter commented. “Each is instrumental in guiding us through the adaptive challenges of a dynamic mission field, the denominational conversations about unity, the call to each local church to move toward vitality, and the disruptions of COVID-19. We are blessed by their dedication and faithfulness. In addition, we want the annual conference to know that cost savings related to these changes will allow us to channel significant financial resources to the mission that occurs in local churches and communities.”
