NCD April 2018 Newsletter
Greetings from the District Superintendent
Dear Pastors and Leaders,
It is with Easter in mind that I consider the mission and work of the NC District and that of all of the churches and all of the pastors alongside all of the people in our communities that have yet to connect with God in a meaningful way. It is with Easter in mind that the love of God made visible on the cross brings us to our knees as we humbly receive its benefits. It is with Easter in mind that the amazing, wondrous reality of the Empty Tomb compels us to ring the bells, shout from the rooftops the message that is too often kept inside our buildings or our hearts with the good news left unspoken on our lips. Surely, it is with Easter in mind that we keep the mission of the church before us at all times and in all places. For we are a people defined every day by the resurrection life, the new creation and the real possibility of transformation that is ever before us, always.
With Easter in mind, we celebrate along with all of those churches who sent their folks into their neighborhoods and communities during the Second Annual “From the Steeple to the Streets” emphasis. As eyes are opened, hearts enlivened and lives touched seeds of the Kingdom are planted in ways we may never see or know. But fruit will be born. I celebrate the Easter hope of transformation in this Fresh Expression
With Easter in mind, we celebrate with the Nueva Vida Mission who has traveled the long faithful road of a new church start and will charter as a church on April 22. Lives have been and will be changed because of their passionate work in Jesus’ name!
With Easter in mind, we celebrate the faithful ministries of Rev. Geraldine McClellan, Rev. Jerry Milner and Rev. Kip Younger upon their retirement and as they claim the possibility and hope of the new creation and transformation in this new season of life that is before them!
Yes, with Easter in mind, life is ever before us and the possibility of life in Christ never ends. Thanks be to God for this Great Love and Life in Jesus Christ! May the good work to which we are called continue with Easter in mind!
Yes! He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!
With Easter in Mind…

Where did you go for Steeple to the Streets 2018? Who did you encounter? What did God show you? Did you observe opportunities to be the church in fresh ways? We want to know!
Follow up to the mobilization of our congregations is vitally important. Praying, observing, and encountering, is potentially the first stage of a fresh expression taking shape, which we identify as simply... "listening."
Here are three simple steps we encourage you to take:
1. Collect the bulletin inserts, (or other ways you may have designated to gather information), from the teams that went out.
2. Please summarize the data in the attached form. If you have not already done so, gather with your team(s) to share stories and summarize. Share these stories in your worship and other gatherings. Discuss with your team what next steps might be.
3. Send the summarized data back to the District. If you need help taking the next step in cultivating a fresh expression from your findings, please indicate this. We want to help you at no cost to your church.
If you already have a fresh expressions in process, included in your response, please tell us the name of the fresh expression, and a brief descriptor that includes what it is, where it meets, and when. We will then add your fresh expression to the Conference website!
How do we "make disciples for the transformation of the world" on the new missional frontier? Is fresh expressions a remix of our core Wesleyan process of discipleship? Check this out...

Baptism at Florida United Methodist Children's Home, Enterprise
At the beginning of the new year, one of the young men living here at the Children's Home decided that, as he approached his eighteenth birthday, he wanted to begin his independent life as a baptized Christian. After a time of prayer, consultation, and coordination, he was baptized during a special service at the Enterprise Campus.
The service followed a United Methodist baptismal liturgy, along with worship songs picked by the young man to reflect his relationship with God. Our Chapel was full of supporters for the baptism, ranging from staff, Board of Trustee members, and other youth here at the Children's Home. One of the Board members, Rev. Bob Laidlaw, surprised the young man with some water that was taken from the Jordan River, where Jesus was baptized. The baptism was conducted by Rev. Madeline Luzinski and Rev. Ryan Frack.
Children in foster care have often had some difficulty reconciling a God who loves them with the abuse and trauma they have experienced in their own lives. Unfortunately, some of the children in our care have also experienced spiritual trauma, thus leading to a negative perception of God. Through the work of the Spiritual Life department, the children learn about a God who is bigger than what they have gone through. Baptism at the Children's Home is a special honor, as most children are only with us for a temporary amount of time. Among their newfound community, they have found a spiritual home here, and baptism allows them the opportunity to proclaim their faith amongst others who will pray for and encourage them.
