NCD February 2021 Newsletter

In the District

Dear NC District Pastors and Leaders,

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28

We begin February reminded it is Black History Month. It was the inspiration of Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and Rev. Jesse E. Moorland in 1915, 50 years following the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery in the United States. Originally, the group known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, chose the second week of February for this focus in order to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Over time it became recognized more and more until it was officially recognized in 1976 by then President Gerald Ford. Each year, children in public school classrooms particularly, learn about the contributions that African Americans in all walks of life have made to our country and our communities. As our children learn, so should we, having missed out on this important history, understanding and insight during our education. It is now more important than ever to learn as much as we can about these persons who have contributed so much to our life as we know it.

In addition to the great contributions of those honored in Black History Month, there is also a history that directly involves our black brothers and sisters that, as those who are White, do not know much about at all. It involves the way in which actions, deeply embedded in our culture and our practices, both formally through laws and regulations and more informally through attitudes and unconscious bias, have had a deep, negative and egregious impact on People of Color. I am speaking of Systemic Racism and White Privilege. By learning what these terms mean and how they have been part of the way of life for many of our brothers and sisters of color, is the responsibility of everyone, but the burden lies particularly the White community who has created these systems. It is far too easy to deny its existence when it is not recognizable. In order to do something about Systemic Racism and White Privilege, we must first know what it means and how it functions. February could be that time. Included here is a link to some resources found on the Conference website as a starting place, though there are many others available.

Lent also begins in February leading up to Easter, starting with Ash Wednesday, February 17th. On Ash Wednesday, we recognize our mortality before God and offer our confessions of sin committed before God and one another and repent of our sins. It is a time where we reflect on the separation from God and one another as a result of our sin, both individually and corporately.

Could it be that Lent offers us that sacred, healing space to begin this work of honoring our brothers and sisters in Christ by closing the space between us through learning, self examination, confession and pardon? Could it be that we can draw closer to the meaning of Paul’s words included at the beginning that we are all one in Christ Jesus? As Pastors and Leaders in the North Central District, I pray you will think on these things.

In the Peace of the Lord,

"Being the Church in a Post Pandemic World"

 Fresh Expression News!

“We have opened the doors, and many have not come back.”

Is this something your team is saying these days? Don’t worry, you are not alone. All of us who serve the local church are in some ways experiencing this.

The real question is how we adapt to our new reality. My colleague at United Seminary, Dr. Rosario Picardo and I tried to create a resource that could help people navigate the continuing challenges of this season of COVID-tide… “Fresh Expressions in a Digital Age: How the Church Can Prepare for a Post Pandemic World.”

Additionally, last month the Florida Conference launched our first FX Studio gathering with churches representing each district across the state. Your team doesn’t have to navigate this reality alone…

Each Studio is comprised primarily of these five elements:
1. A shared focus: Each team is traveling together on the “loving first cycle.” A simple, well-developed process used by tens of thousands of leaders across the world.
2. Self-paced discovery: The free Godsend App and/or the new book “The 21st Century Christian: Following Jesus Where Life Happens.”
3. Community of practice Bi-annual gatherings where teams come together for support, learning, and strategizing. The next gathering will take place Saturday, July 17 9am-12pm.
4. Support via social media: Join the Studio Facebook group and see the plans that other teams across the state are working on:
5. Zoom-based coaching: Feeling stuck? Not to worry, get support from experienced coaches willing to come alongside you in your work.

How do we get started?
1. Get together 1 or more people in your church who have a desire to reach new people.

2. Download the free FX Godsend App or access the materials here:

3. Work through the overview units of the Godsend material with your team.

4. Register for the upcoming Studio here:

Please reach out if you have questions,

2021 Property & Casualty Insurance

As we communicated during the Financial Services webinar on January 7, after rigorous marketing to a litany of excess insurance carriers, the Florida Conference Ministry Protection insurance program saw an 18% increase in insurance premiums over 2020.  The great news, however, is that this increase is not being passed on to the local church!

The 2021 invoices are now online and can be accessed by Clicking HEREChoose "PC/Workers Comp" from the drop-down menu and enter your church's GCFA number. A packet containing insurance information will also be mailed to you in the next few days and will include the invoices and the 2021 Insurance Summary of coverages.

As in years past, if your insurance allocation is paid in full by 2/28/2021, you will receive a 2% discount off the billed amount.

Wesley Brotherhood

The United Methodist Men (UMM) in Florida has rebranded. Wesley Brotherhood is a literal rebirth of our ministry to and through men. We have stripped it down to the discipleship ministry that it was always designed to be and removed all the things that no longer are effective in ministering to men. We are approaching the way we do ministry in a way that will allow us to connect in the future.

Wesley Brotherhood has created a toolbox of ministry partnerships to bring those resources to men throughout Florida. Whether you are struggling with an addiction or you desire to grow as a husband, father, and friend, let us connect your church or community group with these powerful resources.

Wesley Brotherhood produces a number of unique events geared toward developing relationships among men while building their faith in Jesus Christ. We also recommend equipping and growth events provided by other organizations.

Wesley Brotherhood is partnering and participating with Lakeland-based Wingman Nation Men's Ministry at the Full Throttle 2021 Men's Rally on March 6. Learn more and register now.

Public unrest over public health and policing has brought the topic of privilege, and lack of privilege, to the forefront in American society. Statistics seem to show that less-privileged persons are more likely to suffer both from COVID-19 and from police misconduct.

But privilege is not just a social issue. For Christians it is also a faith issue. This brief course offers a non-judgmental setting in which participants begin to assess their own privilege in the light of their faith.

No attempt will be made to “fix” participants, and shaming will be forbidden. The course is meant as a tool and not as a scold.
