Dear North East District Family,
I recently heard a sermon was that was simple in nature, but profound in its message and comfort. It was a reminder that God is with us through suffering, challenges, changes, and in the good times. Intellectually and theologically, I know that. I’ve preached that message many times over the years. It’s also a timeless message that I can forget. I needed the reminder.
The preacher reminded me that when things seem bleak that we can lose sight of what God is doing in our midst. We can get stuck on asking the “why me” question. We can get so focused on ourselves that we begin to forget that we are called for a purpose (laity and clergy alike): to make disciples and transform our sphere of influence for Jesus.
I was also reminded that when times are good, that it’s so easy to forget to thank God and remember that He is with us then as well. As I’ve thought about it, perhaps it’s easier during the easy times to become self-reliant and think we are responsible for the blessings instead of realizing God walks with us - no exceptions.
At one of churches I served, an elder statesman of the congregation used to say, “When good things happen, say, ‘Praise the Lord!’ When bad things happen say, ‘Praise the Lord, anyway!’” That’s simplistic, but there’s good theology in that that. It’s also practical in the ups and downs of life.
I don’t know what’s specifically going on in your life, but I wanted to take the time to remind you that no matter what you’re facing (good, bad, or ugly), God loves you as if you were the only person in all the world. God’s with you in the trenches. Jesus is with you in the challenges and difficult diagnoses. The Holy Spirit is with you in the wins and rewards.
God bless you this summer, and don’t forget to look where God is at work in your midst. Share it with others, and let it spur you on to live out your calling!
Praise the Lord!, and
All God’s love,
