Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) provides emergency food assistance with “feed a family” bags of nonperishable food, with snack bags for homeless people, with daily hot meals and with daily bread. HUM assists with rent when eviction is imminent and with utility assistance when cut-off notices have been given. It provides shelter against the cold for homeless people when the temperature is below 40 degrees. HUM operates a shelter for homeless men as a stepping stone to get them off the street and moving toward a more stable life and coordinates a large corps of volunteers from the faith community.
