Spring Lay Servant Training April 13-14, 2018
New Life Community UMC | 11100 Wingate Road| Jacksonville, FL 32218

Check-In begins at 6 pm on Friday. Training will be held on Friday, April 13, 2017 from 6:30-9 p.m. and also on Saturday, April 14, 2017 from  8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m with lunch and snacks provided. Class sizes are limited to 15 students per class. Be sure to register early. No walk-in registrations please. This training is open to all. If you are seeking to receive certification of re-certification credits you must attend all 10 hours of the training. Registration is now open and will run through April 3, 2017.

**Please note all registrants are required to purchase their own book. Books will NOT be provided. Please be sure to order your book early so you can read the text prior to class. Books can be purchased at www.cokesbury.com; www.upperroom.org and through other sites such as Amazon. 


LAY SERVANT COURSE OFFERINGS
 
Basic Lay Servant with Rev. David Preston This basic course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring and communicating.

Planning Worship with Rev. Lamont Hogans & Granardo Felix (Advanced Lay Servant) This course builds on the course Leading Worship, and is grounded in the principles and practices of worship planning.
Required book – The Worship Workshop: Creative Ways to Design Worship Together by Marcia McFee – ISBN #978-0-68704-634-8

Leading in Prayer with Tina Roach (Advanced Lay Servant) This course focuses on praying in public will help the participant grow in confidence and skill in prayer, both public and personal.
Required book – Let the Whole Church Say Amen! By Laurence Hull Stookey – ISBN #978-0-6870-9077-8

Accountable Discipleship with Rev. Don Thompson (Advanced Lay Servant) This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, Scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understandings of grace, and the importance of the class leader in the development of the Methodist movement.

From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon with Rev. Steve Painter (Advanced Lay Servant) Moving beyond the basics of public speaking and the foundations necessary for preparing an engaging sermon, this course also includes types of sermons – from exegetical to topical for children’s sermons – as well as how to find a story, use the hymnal, and how to move from communication on paper to beyond the paper.

The course fee of $30.00 includes snacks and lunch on Saturday.  Class sizes are limited to 15 students per class. Be sure to register early. No walk-in registrations please.
