Spring Lay Servant Ministry Training 
May 14/15, 2022
Asbury UMC | 16 College Drive, Orange Park, FL

Classes will run on Saturday, May 14, 2020 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m. - check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.) and Sunday, May 15 (3 - 5:30 p.m.) with lunch and snacks provided on Saturday. The classes will be held at Asbury UMC | 16 College Drive | Orange Park, FL. Class sizes are limited to 15 students per class. Cost is $30 per person. Be sure to register early. NO walk-in registrations please. If you want to register by check, please call Pam at the District Office at 904-396-3026 and she will help you get registered.

This training is open to all. If you are seeking to receive certification of re-certification credits you must attend all 10 hours of the training. 

We are offering the following class selections (please note that you must purchase your own book in advance**):

  • Basic Lay Servant Class taught by Mr. Ron Coleman, Lay Servant Director - This basic course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring and communicating. Required Book: "Lay Servant Ministries" by Sandy Zeigler Jackson/Brian Jackson - ISBN # 978-0-88177-626-3**
     
  • Advanced: God's Mission...Our Journey taught by Rev. Jeff Tate from Keystone UMC - This course will provide participants with a better understanding of a holistic apporach to participation in God's mission to the world and equip lay servants for more effective missional engagement in their communities and beyond. Required book – A Mission Journey: A Handbook for Volunteers – ISBN #978-0-8358-1768-8**  
     
  • Advanced - LIving Our UM Beliefs taught by Rev. Durwood Foshee, District Superintendent - This course will explore the special gifts of theology, witness, and organization that the United Methodist Church brings to the church universal, how we got where we are today, and how our distinctive emphases are still needed in the 21st-century church. Required book – Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way by Kenneth L. Carder – ISBN #978-0-88177-571-6**
     
  • Advanced - Leading Missional Small Groups taught by Rev. Jennifer Ahrens-Sims of Asbury UMC - This course teaches the Wesleyan way to form missional communities and congregations. It is based on the conviction that just as holiness of heart leads to holiness of life, it is communities of holy love that participate in God's mission in the world. Required book – Transforming Community by Henry H. Knight III and F. Douglas Powe Jr. – ISBN #978-0-88177-754-3** 

**Please note all registrants are required to purchase their own book. Books will NOT be provided at the start of the training. Please be sure to order your book early so you can read the text prior to class. Books can be purchased at www.cokesbury.com; www.upperroom.org and through other sites such as Amazon.
