Fall Lay Servant Training September 11-12, 2021

Classes will run on Saturday, September 11, 2021 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m. - check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.) and Sunday, September 12, 2021 (3 - 5:30 p.m.) with lunch and snacks provided on Saturday. The classes will be held at Garden City UMC | 3057 Dunn Ave | Jacksonville, FL. Class sizes are limited to 15 students per class (Except for the Campus Ministry class.) Cost is $30 per person. Be sure to register early. NO walk-in registrations please. If you want to register by check, please call Pam at the District Office at 904-396-3026 and she will help you get registered.
This training is open to all. If you are seeking to receive certification of re-certification credits you must attend all 10 hours of the training.
We are offering the following class selections (please note that you must purchase your own book in advance**):
- Basic Lay Servant Class with Rev. Larry Dunn of Garden City UMC - This basic course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring and communicating. Required Book: "Lay Servant Ministries" by Sandy Zeigler Jackson/Brian Jackson - ISBN # 978-0-88177-626-3**
- Advanced Class - Accountable Discipleship with Rev. David Preston of Wesconnett UMC - This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, the importance of scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understandings of grace, and the importance of the office of class leader in the development of the Methodist movement. You are encouraged to look at your own faith community and see how it is (or is not) a reflection of genuine Christian community. Required Book: "Accountable Discipleship" by Steven W. Manskar - ISBN # 978-0-88177-339-2**
- Advanced Class - Discover Your Spiritual Gifts - Rev Steve Painter of San Marco UMC. This course helps participants understand spiritual gifts and how the church can use them to fulfill its mission and ministry. Participants will also learn what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts. Required Book: "Rediscovering Our Spiritual Gifts" by Charles V. Bryant - ISBN # 978-0-8358-0633-6**
- Advanced Class - Campus Ministry: Empowering Congregations to Support Students at Colleges and Universities with Mr. Derrick Scott and Rev. Haley Eccles of Campus to City Wesley. This course helps lay servants understand and communicate the key role played by local churches in nourishing the spiritual lives of college students through campus ministries. Consider sending a small team from your church to attend this class. This class will NOT be capped at only 15 registrants. Required Book: "Campus Ministry: Empowering Congregations to Support Students at Colleges and Universities" by Colleen Hallagan Preuninger - ISBN # 978-0-88177-935-6**
**Please note all registrants are required to purchase their own book. Books will NOT be provided at the start of the training. Please be sure to order your book early so you can read the text prior to class. Books can be purchased at www.cokesbury.com; www.upperroom.org and through other sites such as Amazon.
Lunch will be boxed lunches from Jason's Deli. You can choose from the following: nitrite-free ham, roasted turkey breast or chicken salad with almonds and pineapple served on an organic wheat wrap - with leafy lettuce and tomato, chips, pickle and a chocolate chip cookie. Vegetarian option: Spinach Veggie Wrap, chips, pickle, chocolate chip cookie.
