Youth Director - Part-time
St. James UMC in Tampa Palms is looking for a passionate, energetic, creative and innovative leader with a heart for Youth and their families. The Director of Youth Ministry will provide the leadership for developing, implementing, and supervising a program of ministry for youth grades 6-12 that foster students’ growth and their connections with God, with one another, and with our community. The Director will join a Spirit-led and creative team of staff and congregational leaders, committed to God, to each other, and to our mission to connect every life with the love of God.
The position is presently a part-time position, with primary commitment on Sundays, with some hours during the week. This makes it ideal for a college student, or an individual seeking to supplement another part-time job. With the growth of the ministry and the church, this position should become full-time within a year.
Position summary
The Director of Youth Ministry will provide the leadership for developing, implementing, and supervising a program of ministry for youth grades 6-12 that foster students’ growth and their connections with God, with one another, and with our community. The Youth Director will work under the Supervision of the Director of Children's and Family Ministries. The Youth Director will also effectively interact with students, staff members, parents, and volunteers of the youth ministry to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world through faith development, fellowship, service, and fun. These efforts support the strategic goals of St. James to be a church that connects the world to the love of God.
Roles and responsibilities
Foster Faith Building:
- Prepare lessons and activities for weekly experiences: e.g. Sunday School and Sunday evening meetings
- Research and plan spiritual retreats and other off-campus spiritual events
- Provide or coordinate Annual Confirmation Instruction
- Devote personal and professional life to being an example of what it means to follow Jesus Christ
Lead Youth Activities:
- Promote youth Christian service within St. James UMC as well as outside service projects opportunities and mission trips.
- Coordinate fund-raising activities that support special youth activities and trips
- Plan a variety of activities that will attract Middle and High School students to be part of the Body of Christ.
Communication & Connections:
- Effectively utilize communication channels such as email, phone calls, newsletters, Instagram, Facebook, Remind App, and others to communicate relevant information to students, parents, and volunteers
- Create and publish an annual calendar of activities and meetings. Communicate meetings and activities in the church bulletin
- Effectively coordinate with Children’s Ministry to ensure continuity and progression of experiences from one level to the next
- Allocate time for developing personal connections with Youth and families
Develop and Lead Ministry Volunteers:
- Identify, recruit, motivate, and develop volunteers to assist in accomplishing ministry objectives
- Effectively use volunteers to support the logistics and planning of large events such as off-campus retreats, mission trips, and service projects
- Supervise adult and youth volunteers to plan and organize special events and activities
- Ensure that all volunteers are trained, meet the volunteer criteria, and adhere to the UMC Child/Youth Protection Policy
Other Responsibilities:
- Prepare annual budget and administer the budget throughout the year
- Maintain permission slips, health forms, and other paperwork to adhere to the UMC Child/Youth Protection Policy
Minimum Qualifications and requirements
- One or more years of proven effective experience in ministry, preferably with youth
- Bachelor’s or Associates degree preferred
- Strong commitment to the Christian faith and the theology of the United Methodist Church
- Willing to adhere to the St James UMC Staff Policies and Statement of Ethics, to be loyal to the Lead Pastor and church leadership, and faithful to St James UMC vision, values, and mission
- Flexible availability to include Sunday, some evenings, and weekends
- Maintain some regularly scheduled office hours to be accessible to youth, parents, staff, and leadership of the congregation
- Core Competencies include Passion, Enthusiasm, Self-Starter, Relationship Building, Organization, Communication Skills
Preferred qualifications
- Two-Three years of successful youth ministry experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree not required, but preferred, focused in youth, religious education, theology, or a similar field
- Familiarity with the United Methodist Church structure, mission opportunities, and resources.
- The ability to transition from a part-time to a full-time role in the future
- Experience leading Youth in the worship arts, drama, visual arts, or any other art form of youth interest.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to participate in athletic activities as required for relationship-building in youth ministries
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
