This position is a part-time (20-25 hours a week). It has potential to grow into full-time. It also may be combined with our posted part-time youth ministry position to create a full-time position – persons applying for a combined position must demonstrate gifting for working with both children and youth.
Morrison UMC’s mission is to Connect people to God’s transforming love through worship, discipleship, fellowship, and service.  Morrison UMC is located in downtown Leesburg and serves the greater Leesburg area – this includes communities south of Leesburg, the southern portion of the Villages, Fruitland Park, and more.
Purpose: To lead a children’s ministry that reaches children from infant through elementary school (with a primary emphasis on school aged children). This includes nurturing children as Christ followers who are already a part of our church and reaching out to children who are not yet a part.
The Director of Children’s Ministry will be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • A growing relationship with God through Jesus Christ and be able to share a calling to children’s ministry. 
  • Having a United Methodist background or understanding of Wesleyan theology is preferred, however others are welcome to apply.
  • Must be able to work under the current Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. And must be able to follow the various personnel policies of Morrison UMC and the Florida Annual Conference of the UMC.
  • Completion of at least a high school diploma or equivalent; previous children’s ministry experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to plan, organize, lead, and guide children’s projects and other activities related to children’s ministries 
  • Must be able to work in a team environment – especially with the youth ministry director.
  • Maintaining a positive outlook is critical.
  • Communication, organization/planning, and leadership skills are critical.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must be willing to work within our staff covenant.
General Duties: 
  • Set the overall vision, in consultation with others, for children’s ministry with a plan to carry it out. 
  • Develop programs, activities, and events that that enable our students to live out our church’s mission.  
  • Create and lead summer activities.
  • Work in cooperation with the youth ministry director for family ministry events and in creating a cooperative discipling ministry.
  • Build and maintain relationships with children inside and outside of the church. 
  • Recruit, train and oversee volunteer leaders – meet regularly with volunteers, provide annual training events – including working with youth ministry director in annual Youth/Child Protection Policy training.
  • Oversee and train Sunday teachers. In the short-term the director will likely need to teach a class to help us rebuild children’s Sunday school.
  • Provide oversight of Sunday worship nursery volunteer or staff.
  • Will serve as the liaison between the congregation and the preschool.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents. 
  • Make use of various communication tools including email, phone, texts, and social media.
  • In cooperation with the Pastor and finance committee, prepare and oversee the children’s ministry budget.
  • Attend worship weekly at Morrison.
Reporting: This position reports directly to the Senior Pastor, meets annually with the Staff Parish Committee to provide updates on achievements and challenges of the previous year, and relates to youth ministry staff.
