General Description:

The Director of Children’s & Family Ministry oversees the entire children’s ministry team, providing ministry to children, starting from birth through 5th grade, and young families. 


  1. Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, a focus in Christian Education or Education.
  2. Bring entrepreneurial & organizational skills in identifying and developing new ministries with children and their families.
  3. Exhibit strong skills for planning, organization, administration, motivation, supervision and leadership of children, families and volunteer staff.
  4. Manifest a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a strong commitment to the Christian faith and be supportive of official United Methodist doctrines and discipline.
  5. Must successfully pass church-specific criminal background check.


  1. Build and empower effective teams at all levels of children’s and family ministries; staff, leaders, volunteers (adult & youth).  Resource leaders with engaging curriculum and ongoing support and training. 
  2. Cast the vision for children’s and family ministry with the wider community.  Find new and creative ways to share the story and impact of our ministry, and create pathways for new volunteers to join in. 
  3. Design intentional ministry with parents and caregivers, build small groups where parents can find mutual support, and provide resources to help prompt faith conversations at home. 
  4. Work with the Director of Youth to create strategies to help families/children transition between life stages. 
  5. Manage along with the Director of Youth the major events that we implement as a team for families in our church and broader community (Good News Club, Easter, VBS, Halloween, Christmas, etc.).  Seek out and create new opportunities for fellowship & outreach to families in our community. 
  6. Manage the day to day operation of the children’s department – budget, communications and relationships with other staff departments. 
  7. Plan, organize, and implement weekly children’s classes (nursery through 5th grade).  This includes selecting curriculum, scheduling, overseeing and supporting volunteers, preparing lessons and activities for teachers, serving in the classroom as needed and timely communication with parents. 
  8. Provides a safe environment for children and youth by adhering to and enforcing our Child and Youth Protection Policy.  This includes making sure that all volunteers working with the children/youth have up to date background checks and the required annual training on the policy. 
  9. Be the “face” of 1st Church Children’s and Family Ministry.  In this role, the Director is expected to build a positive relationship with the congregation and community so that he/she can maintain support for the ministry.
