The General Board of Discipleship has chosen Rev. Candace Lewis, an ordained elder in the Florida Conference, to become executive director of New Church Starts, Path 1.

Her goal is to train 2,000 new church planters and establish 1,000 new churches by 2016.

"Although there were many qualified candidates, Candace was the clear choice," said Karen Greenwaldt, GBOD general secretary. "Her energy and passion for new church starts will build on the church's commitment to reach new people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the creation of new fairth communities."

Lewis has been serving as a new church start strategist since 2009. Before that, she successfully started the New Life Community UMC congregation in Jacksonville. She is a University of Florida graduate who holds a master of divinity degree from Gammon Theological Seminary. She also received a certificate from Harvard Divinity School's Institute on Faith-based Community Ecomomic Development.

She will begin her new duties Sept. 17.
