April 2019 District Newsletter

Message from District Superintendent

Dear North East District Family,

In just a few short days, we’ll celebrate Easter and the victorious resurrection of Jesus. The whole span of time hangs on this one event! In that one moment Jesus declared victory over sin, evil, and death, and because of it we all can have new life and a new purpose. Praise God!

You’ve heard me say before (and may be tired of hearing it), but I believe Jesus has chosen His church to be His Plan A at work in the world to bring about the salvation and transformation of creation. You and I (even you and me!) are His Plan A, and there isn’t a Plan B! It’s terrifying, humbling, and exhilarating all at the same time.

In the wake of General Conference it would be easy to focus on the denominational intrigue that continues to go on. Much of it is important, but in my opinion, Satan wins if we focus so much on it that we get distracted from the mission that Jesus gave us on Easter: making disciples and transforming our world. I want to challenge you for the rest of Lent and certainly the 50 days of Easter that follow to ask yourselves where your priorities are. Are you spending time reading too many blogs, social media posts, and email blasts from one United Methodist special interest group or another? Or are you spending time working with leaders in your faith community figuring out your next strategy for reaching the unchurched and dechurched in your community?

If Easter is the most important moment in the history of creation, and I believe it is, then we ought to live like it! It ought to drive the decisions we make in our faith communities. It should be the filter we use when we decide our strategic plans. It should push us to meet new people in new places in new ways.

I pray that the remainder of Lent is holy and that you richly soak in the Holy Spirit who wants to continue to do a great work in you. I also pray Easter is a celebration of victory that inspires you to keep your eye on the mission and reach new people for Jesus.

God bless you!

All God’s love,

Annual Assessment of Clergy Leadership
Due May 31

Each year United Methodist clergy are to engage in a process of assessment of effectiveness.  A team from the Florida Conference Board of Ordained Ministry has worked diligently to provide clergy and local church Committees on Staff Parish Relationships with a set of tools that will assist in that process.  It is the hope that each clergy and each SPRC will take this process seriously so that our clergy continue to grow in effectiveness toward our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
