“The presence of anxiety is unavoidable,

but the prison of anxiety is optional”

-        Max Lucado, Anxious for Nothing

“Always be full of joy in the Lord.  I say it again – rejoice! …

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.

Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done …

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable,

and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable …”

(Philippians 4: 4, 6, 8 NLT)

I sit here and write this article in a dry, air-conditioned space recognizing that while I am grateful that Hurricane Dorian did not affect us, I overwhelmed by sadness for the lives that have been destroyed by this massive storm.  I know you are in a similar place … maybe even struggling with a measure of ‘survivor’s guilt.’  Yesterday I was in an annual conference meeting helping create our relief plan to aid the Bahamas and out of that meeting Bishop Carter put together a grace-filled video to share in worship this weekend with our local churches and a “Dorian Fact Sheet”.  These items can be found at https://floridarestores.com/hurricane-preparedness.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.  We will continue to update you as we hear about the needs.

We live in an anxious world and impending hurricanes do not help our societal anxiety. Our heightened technology can contribute to our anxiety if we do not monitor it.  In the middle of the Monday night, I awoke to an alert on my NOAA app.  Grabbing my phone, I expected to see an update about Dorian.  The alert was about Hurricane Juliette in the Pacific Ocean.  All I could think was “really?”  Not to diminish Juliette, but I really didn’t need to know anything about the track of that storm!

Anxiety is looming around the corner.  Add in our political anxiety, denominational anxiety, and our local church anxiety in a changing culture and if we do not follow St. Paul’s instructions in choosing joy, we will live in the “prison of anxiety.”

Sometimes when I feel stress beginning to overwhelm me, I literally focus on a phrase or statement that is true:  “Come Holy Spirt,”  “Jesus is Lord”, “In Your mercy, hear my prayer”, or  “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”.  I also breath in the Holy Spirit and breath out the fear.  I think this is what the Psalmist meant when they wrote “But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night” (Psalm 1:2 NLT).  When I do, I feel my anxiety decrease and my peace increase.

Today I am praying for you, your churches, and your communities as you reach out with the love of Jesus helping people experience “God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand” (Philippians 4:7 NLT).  Thank you for the grace and peace you extend to others … be sure to choose it for yourself!

Grace and peace ~

Dionne

A Message from Bishop Carter/ Hurricane Dorian
We encourage our people to receive an offering for UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, in the midst of Hurricane Dorian and its aftermath. The Florida Conference has been the beneficiary of gifts as we have recovered from storms, and we encourage generous and sacrificial giving in the days ahead. We will communicate with you and stay in touch in the days ahead. We trust that God will supply all of our needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4. 19). Click here to donate on line. UMCOR Advance #982450

A Fond Farewell

We celebrate the ministry of our dear friend, co-worker, and beloved employee Patti Moxley, Senior Administrative Assistant to our District Superintendent, who will begin a new adventure. Patti is retiring as of September 30th. We all recognize Patti for her unconditional dedication, grace, and congeniality. She will be deeply missed but we can only feel happy for her after 15 years of service to our District. And previous to that she served 10 years at 1st. Titusville as the church's Administrative Assistant. Her accomplishments will always be there to remind us of how important she was to so many. And in her retirement, we know that God is with her, 'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' Jeremiah 29:11

From Patti...

I can hear Frank Sinatra singing it now..."I Did it My Way".  It' been 25 years that I have been doing ministry in the United Methodist Church.  Over 15 years for the District Office.  I've seen many things.  A man calling himself Jesus once came to my door at First UMC, Titusville.  I've prayed with people dying at the hospital, I've handed out food and diapers, I've done bulletins, newsletters, end of year reports, and with the District office I have called you about your end of year reports.  I've prayed with Pastors, secretaries, other District AA's.  I've learned a lot and hopefully have passed on that knowledge.  At the end of this month I will say my fond farewell to the District office and to each of you.  I ask God to bless each one of you and your churches...I know that you will continue to show God's love to those in your community and beyond!  Serving you all has been one of the biggest joys of my life.  God Bless YOU Always!  Patti

Car Donation Needed

-YAMM needs a car-

Do you have a running vehicle that could be used to better communities, develop young adults and change the world?

If you have a car or truck that runs but you could donate it to the YAMM program, we will use the vehicle to get our young mission fellows to their service sites. Especially in our rural and suburban sites, public transportation is now available. And many young adults do not have their own transportation.

The need is serious and immediate. We had one blow a head gasket and is beyond repair.

Please contact Heidi Aspinwall for details.  haspinwall@flumc.org  (305)733-4420.
