"Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet, and a light for my path."

- Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

A week ago Wednesday, I got up at 5:00 AM to go running with Scott Smith, pastor at First UMC Ormond Beach and his friend Eric.  We were still on Daylight Savings Time so when we got to the ocean to begin our run, it was still pitch black.  But my eyes were slowly adjusting.  I stayed right behind Scott and in front of Eric so I wouldn’t be alone in the dark.  By the time we turned around and began running north on the beach, just the smallest amount of light started to edge up on the horizon.  The darkness was pushed back.  Here’s a picture from when we were done:

So many analogies for our lives:  when it’s dark - give ourselves enough space and grace to allow ourselves to adjust and take it slowly; don’t go it alone – always have friends who run alongside us; take note of the light when it appears – give thanks for the illumination along the way.

One of the things I’m learning is that my connection to God determines if my being alone plays out as loneliness or solitude.  If I feel the presence of Jesus, know that the Holy Spirit is guiding my words and actions, and the Father is rooting me on calling me His beloved daughter no matter what, I feel confident and reassured even when I am facing something difficult or painful.  His presence is my light for my path.  And the opposite is true ... when I neglect my spiritual disciplines and launch out on my own, I can pretty quickly feel lonely, overwhelmed, and isolated.

My goal is to be so connected to God that:

"In the center of breathless activities, we hear a restful breathing.  Surrounded by hours of moving, we find a
moment of quiet stillness.  In the heart of much involvement, there are words of withdrawal.  In the midst of action,
there is contemplation.  And after much togetherness, there is solitude” (Out of Solitude
, Nouwen 17).

As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope you will pause and know that God is lighting our path and guiding our feet.  May God bless you and your family +

Grace and peace,
Dionne

Unstuck 2020 Training Event

Saturday, February 29, 2019  l  10:00 AM - 3:00 PM  l  Beach UMC, Jacksonville Beach, FLJoin the North East District for their 2020 Training Event entitled EQUIP 2020 - Unstuck

All appointed clergy and church leaders are invited to participate in the training event. Tony Morgan from The Unstuck Group will be speaking on the following topics:

  • Interruption and Assessment: Interruptions challenge us to pause and assess what's happening, then build a plan to respond. Without interruption, every church has the potential to go through a very similar life cycle. In this session, Tony Morgan shares the seven phases of the typical church life cycle and helps you learn how to discover if your church is really stuck.
  • Planning and Action:  Where do churches most often get stuck? In this session, Tony digs deeper into two phases of the life cycle where churches tend to get stuck. He will offer practical frameworks and discussions around clarifying mission, vision and strategy, building a structure that reflects your strategy, and reducing complexity. You will walk away with a clearer understanding of the next step God has for your church.

This event is best attended as a team from your church. We encourage your leadership team to attend with the pastor.

Registration is now open! Click here for details and to register! You can register as an individual or as a group. Cost is $10.00 per person to attend. Registration is limited to 400 participants.
