Unleashing the Power of God:  A District Year of Prayer

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for.
Keep on seeking, and you will find.
Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives.
Everyone who seeks, finds.
And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”
- Matthew 7:7-8 (NLT)

“There is no such thing as a dysfunctional organization,
because every organization is perfectly aligned
to achieve the results it currently gets”
The Practice of Adaptive Leadership

Dear Friends ~

Imagine with me that at the end of May 2023 as this school year comes to completion, you, your church, and your community have been transformed because of the power of prayer.  What would it look like to carve out specific times for prayer so that you grow closer to God and unleash God’s power in your life? What would it look like if your church began this journey?  Could it be that we are experiencing the results we are currently getting because we are not following Jesus’ words about asking, seeking, and knocking?

I was in a conversation almost two months ago with a colleague and friend and we were talking about our challenges and what we want to be different.  Out of that conversation, we committed to praying with each other for one hour weekly early Wednesday mornings.  We decided to align our lives with prayer together so that we can unleash God’s power in our lives.  We text each other the night before the requests.  Today was our fourth time together over the phone praying and already I am seeking how God is affirming this commitment.

Then as I was sitting with two other District Superintendents visioning for the year, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to declare this year – September 2022 - June 2023 – A District Year of Prayer for the Atlantic Central District.  Starting with our Fall Church/Charge Conferences, we will pray together, asking, seeking, and knocking, believing Jesus’ promise that we will receive, find, and experience open doors!  The culmination of our year will include an opportunity to travel to The Holy Land from April 25 - May 5, 2023 – Save the date and details to follow!

So here is what I want you to do!  Make the commitment and join me for the following prayer opportunities:

  • Praying together at your Local Church/Charge Conference (please see the link for when your church is having its church/charge conference)

  • Monthly Prayer ZOOM Gathering – 12 Noon – 1:00 PM on the last Wednesday of the month (9/28, 10/26, 11/30, 1/25, 2/22, 3/29)

  • Advent ZOOM Prayer Study – 12:00 Noon-  1:00 PM Wednesdays 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21

  • Lenten ZOOM Prayer Study – 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM Wednesdays 3/1, 3/ 8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29, 4/5

  • Weekly prayer videos led by clergy and lay leaders beginning in October sent through MarcoPolo app centering on themes of prayer

  • North/Central/South Spring Concerts of Prayer throughout the District

  • Holy Land Journey – April 25 - May 5, 2023

Finally, during our Fall Church/Charge Conferences, we will be taking an offering for student scholarships for The Moscow Seminary of the United Methodist Church.  As you know, the war between Russia and Ukraine has created so many terrible hardships.  The Moscow Seminary which serves the Euro-Asian Conference and has many students from Ukraine, is an opportunity to support sisters and brothers who are called to share the love of Jesus Christ in many, many dark and challenging places.  Thank you for your generosity!

May the blessing of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit be yours.  See you at Church/Charge Conferences!

Grace and peace ~
