AC Newsletter November 2022

“Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers:

Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen
(who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.
While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’
So after they had fasted and prayed,
they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
- Acts 13:1-3 (NIVUK)

Dear Atlantic Central District Friends ~

As we are recovering from another storm, we take peace and assurance that God is with us and will use all things to work together for good for us who are called according to God’s purposes.  My prayer is that you, your family, your congregation, and community are safe.

In early November, I attended the Southeast Jurisdictional Conference where three new bishops were elected.  The Annual Conference Delegations of the Southeast Jurisdiction were entrusted by their home conference to discern God’s will for these leadership/overseer roles in The United Methodist Church.  As we read in the above passage about the Early Church, Christian discernment requires prayer, fasting, and hearing from the Holy Spirit.  May God bless these new episcopal leaders and the annual conferences they will lead!

Jurisdictional Conference is also the event where new episcopal assignments are made.  Beginning January 1, 2023, Bishop Tom Berlin will serve as the new bishop for the Florida Conference!  Bishop Tom, married to Karen and the father of four daughters, is the Lead Pastor at Floris United Methodist Church in Northern Virginia.  He is a prolific author having written many books on practical Christianity and church leadership. Bishop Tom also has served at annual, jurisdictional, and general conference levels.

Bishop Tom and I have corresponded, and he is looking forward to being with us in the Atlantic Central District.  We are grateful for the ministry of Bishop Ken and Pam Carter and ask that God bless them as they continue ministry in North Carolina.  Join me in praying for this episcopal transition as we look toward the future!

Finally, as our Fall Charge/Church Conference Season is concluding, remember our District Year of Prayer!  More information can be found in this newsletter.  Here are some upcoming  opportunities for which to register:

Please email flumc-ac@flumc.org if you have any questions or need additional information.

Finally, as we look forward to the holiday season, let us be grateful for all the God is doing for us.  Have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving +

Grace and peace ~
Dionne
