“Long before He laid down earth’s foundations,
He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love,
To be made whole and holy by his love”
-       Ephesians 1:4 The Message

A week ago, Monday, July 8th, marked 40 years when my heart was strangely warmed.  I remember the day like it was yesterday.  I was on vacation with my friend and her family in a very small town in the mountains of North Carolina and we were at an open-air worship service in a cemetery.  They called it “Decoration” because we brought flowers to decorate loved ones’ head stones.  Then the preaching began.  Pretty soon I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit - forgiveness and unconditional love – and was overwhelmed by Grace.  I certainly did not understand fully what occurred, but my life changed from that point on.  Like all of us, we could never predict where God would lead.  Last Monday I paused and gave thanks for God’s faithfulness in my journey over the last 40 years.  I was reminded that I was his idea in the first place … and so are you!
I am so excited, humbled and honored to be serving as the Atlantic Central District Superintendent.  Officially two weeks in and thus far the work is energizing me!  I drove up and down I-95 welcoming new pastors into our district.  All this driving has given me lots of time to listen, reflect and pray.  As I have pondered my role, God has led me to a simple vision:  To come alongside each pastor and each church to take their next best faithful step forward to accomplish their mission of introducing people to Jesus.  I know walking with one pastor will look very different than walking with another pastor.  The same is true for local churches.  But in our different contexts and with our different gifts and personalities, God is calling us to continue moving ahead one step at a time.  The Ephesians passage reminds us that our call began long ago … before He laid down the earth’s foundations!
I am experienced enough to know that I do not have all the answers, will make the wrong decisions and have to, of course, correct my way forward.  I commit to do my best, put myself in places to hear from the Holy Spirit through my spiritual practices, and ask for forgiveness along the way.  Thank you for the prayers, the warm welcome and support as I begin.  I am praying for each pastor, their family, local church and community.  Please know that I am available to you and look forward to hearing about the ways God is moving in your ministry!  May God continue to make us whole and holy by his love!
Grace and peace ~
