Sour Cream Devil's Food Cake

Grandma's Devil's Food Cake. A scrumptious Devil's food cake that, once you make it, will be requested over again. My grandmother sent me this recipe when I was a teenager, and it was a special gift for her to share with me. She's been gone for nearly 30 years and having a hand-written recipe from her makes me smile every time I see it.

Sour Cream Devil's Food Cake


1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3 eggs, separated
2 squares chocolate or 4 Tbsp cocoa
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup hot water

Cream sugar and shortening, then add egg yolks.
Melt chocolate in hot water and add to the sugar mixture. 
Add Vanilla and sour cream
Sift flour, add salt, soda and baking powder.
Fold in beaten egg whites

Bake in a loaf pan at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or in square layer pans at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
