German Chocolate Cake

Made from scratch and so worth the effort.

German Chocolate Cake


1 cup sugar
1/2 cup oleo
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1 package German chocolate
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 cup boiling water
2 egg whites

Cream sugar and oleo. Add beaten egg yolks and vanilla. Melt chocolate and add the boiling water. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together. Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Mix chocolate into egg yolk mixture then add some of the flour then buttermilk. Alternate  until all are mixed. Beat egg whites until they hold their shape, then fold into batter. Bake at 350 degrees. Icing: 1 cup canned milk, 3 egg yolks, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 lump butter. Cook for 5 minutes after they begin to cook, stir constantly. Add:1/2 cups chopped pecans and 1 cup coconut, cool and spread on cool cake.
