Registration is open for "Waking to God's Dream," a Florida United Methodist Men's retreat planned for Oct. 9-10, and Russ Graves, Florida Conference lay leader, is promising it will be an experience well worth participants' time.
"I have heard from pastors, district superintendents, men under and over 50 and others that the United Methodist Men’s group in Florida needs to re-envision how we do ministry if we are to be relevant," Graves said by email.
"If it’s going to meet the need of men of all ages (in a tough, often unfriendly world) and appeal to men who might rather be hunting, fishing, online gaming or on the golf course, it must do the right things and do them better. On Oct. 9 and 10, the United Methodist Men are taking a step that is one of a number of initiatives that the old guard and the new voices are working together to better reach out and engage men from 18 to 80. They’re taking a chance and doing something that the old guys would say, 'We’ve never done that before,' and the younger guys would say, 'I’m looking for wisdom from older friends, not correction from parents.'
"Retired Bishop Dick Wills and Rev. Dr. E. Dale Locke will take us on a journey that speaks to us of God’s plan for you and me. The journey is not one we are to take alone but one where we have a band of brothers, friends and mentors to share our struggles, help with the heavy lifting and help deal with the obstacles and temptations in life."
In addition to Wills and Locke, Graves is one of the program speakers. The retreat will be held at the Florida Conference Life Enrichment Center, 4991 Picciola Road, Fruitland Park. For registration and details about the retreat, click here.
A second Florida UMM retreat, "Partnering with God," is planned for Oct. 23-25 at the Life Enrichment Center. For more about that retreat and to register, click here.
