October 2016 District News

Message from the District Superintendent

As we "fall" into October, Jay has already visited 51 of the 73 churches in the North East District. Each visit has reinforced that while there is always much work to do, our district is filled with wonderful, spirit-filled people doing amazing things in the name of Jesus. For example, check out the great work that Simpson Memorial UMC did this summer with the youth in their area. In addition, we just closed out a great fall Lay Servant Training program with over 50 participants. Thanks to our Lay Servant Director, Linda Cumbie, for all of her hard work and dedication to this ministry.

Before you read Jay's message for October, please mark you calendars for his Installation Service which will be held on November 6, 2016, 3 p.m. at Mandarin UMC. Formal invitations have been sent out. All are welcome to attend. All clergy attending are invited to be part of the processional and should wear black robes. All elders/deacons should also wear a red stole. Clergy - please RSVP so we can get a head count for the processional.

District Office Staff Vacation

Pam Mullay will be on vacation from Friday, September 30, 2016 through and including Monday, October 10, 2016. She will return to the office on Tuesday, October 11. During this time period, the district office will be open from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Ashleigh will be in the office when Pam is out. We are still accepting charge conference documents, but please be mindful of the office hours if you are dropping off the forms.

Pastoral Assessment Changes

The Cabinet has approved changes to the pastoral assessments that in previous years have been due in October. We have streamlined the forms and are moving the due date to May 31. We did this to make them easier as well as move them from the fall that is already busy with charge conferences, stewardship, and Advent/Christmas preparation.

You can do the assessments anytime from January 1 – May 31, but we suggest waiting until after Easter so you don’t have to do them during the Lenten Season. One additional change we approved is that if your church already has a form that it uses to evaluate its pastors and wants to use that form, you may do so. You can find more information about the assessments on our website.

There is a Fresh Expressions “Spark Day” in Jacksonville on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Spark Days are designed to help you understand what Fresh Expressions are all about and how to begin thinking about implementing one. There is also a “Surge Retreat” on October 24-25 at the LEC in connection with the Clergy Gathering. Both of these events would be helpful if you’re wanting to start a Fresh Expression with your faith community. You can learn more about the Fresh Expressions Ministry on our website

New Health Insurance for Clergy & Updates to Pension

It is important for clergy and church leadership to understand all of the changes that will take place in 2017. Be sure to read the following items:

2017 Leadership Training Event

In year's past, we have done a traditional leadership training event where all of the chairs or church leaders from your church attend the event to receive training that is specific to the area in which they serve in the local church. In 2017, we will be hosting a training event that will be led by The Mission Society.

The Mission Society will host two Activate Conferences in 2017:

The conferences are identical and you can choose which you would like to attend. The district superintendent is requiring all clergy to attend one of the days ALONG WITH key stakeholders from their congregation.

The Mission Society will begin to walk your team through putting together a strategic plan for missions and outreach and then will offer coaching to implement that plan throughout the year. THERE IS NO COST TO YOUR CHURCH TO WORK WITH THE MISSION SOCIETY. To pay their services forward, they will ask that you consider tithing your missions dollars to them for one year so they can continue to work with other churches. The only cost of the training event will be for lunch that day. We will have registration online very soon.

The district superintendent will conduct SPRC Trainings on November 29, 2016 @ Middleburg UMC & December 12, 2016 (location still being finalized) from 7-9 p.m. Please click here to register to attend one of the training sessions.

We ask that you urge your SPRC chair/committee to attend one of these trainings, especially if they will be new to their position in January. As a reminder to you, S/PPRCs ARE NOT authorized to take a vote on whether their pastor should remain or moved unless you specifically receive permission from the district superintendent.

In regards to training for Finance, Trustees, Nominations, Church Council etc., we encourage you to use webinars that the General Board of Discipleship has produced. You and your team can watch them together and it will save you from having to travel. Those webinars can be accessed here: http://www.umcdiscipleship.org/leadership-resources/archived-webinars. You can also find additional training resources on the Conference website

Department of Labor New Regulations

On December 1, 2016, new regulations from the U.S. Department of Labor will go into effect. These regulations govern overtime and will affect most people who make less than $47,476 a year. Many of your staff will be exempt (pastors, possibly youth and children’s ministers, etc.), but some will not be and you need to be aware of these regulations. Please click here to read more about the changes and also some timekeeping suggestions from the Conference Human Resources Department.

Keeping The Faith

For our October newsletter, Rev. David Moenning shares "A Word in Favor of Soul Care." He writes "that's what Solomon had in mind when he wrote Proverbs 4:23, "Guard your heart with all diligence for from it flow the springs of life." "

We want to encourage you to find ways to appreciate your clergy appointed to your church. Serving a local church as a pastor is one of the greatest privileges someone can ever have. It is also one of the most daunting. Please take time to ask your church to share their appreciation for your pastors. Consider finding some tangible ways to thank them.

If you’re looking for creative ideas on how to appreciate your clergy, check out these websites: http://www.thrivingpastor.com/clergyappreciation/ and http://www.my-pastor.com/pastor-appreciation.html.
