Bishop's Corner Proud To Be A United Methodist By Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson
In spite of
all that has come our way in recent weeks, I am still proud to be a member of the United
Methodist Church within the center of the Florida Annual Conference. This is not to say
that all our denomination pleases me. Frankly, there are times when I hang my head in
shame as I view some of the actions of a few of our general boards and agencies, a small
number of bishops, and a vocal, visible cadre of pastors who seem to take great delight in
defiant actions against the mandate of the General Conference.
For 60 plus years I have been a part of this band of warriors. My parents moved from Porterdale, Ga., to Covington when I was just two years old. Shortly thereafter my mom and dad carried us to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Covington. It was there I learned the great hymns, the Apostles’ Creed, heard stirring sermons, and used the other nickel my mama gave me to purchase ice cream between Sunday school and the 11 o’clock worship service. There, I received the foundations for my faith.
There are hundreds, even thousands, of boys and girls who, with nurture and guidance, will become our future pastors, district superintendents, bishops, teachers, principals, architects, engineers, pilots, doctors, dentists, lawyers, and infinitum.
Yes, I am unapologetically, unashamedly, undeniably, and extremely proud of the United Methodist Church.
