Director of Connectional Ministries


The Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church ( is seeking a qualified Director of Connectional Ministries with the skills, experience, humility, and innovated spirit needed to lead the conference in its endeavor to increase the capacity of the local church to make disciples. 
The purpose of the Director’s position is to focus and guide the resources of the Tennessee Conference to the local church in order for local churches to (1) invest in young people (2) engage the mission field (3) grow in faithfulness and fruitfulness, and (4) develop pipelines of transformational lay and clergy leaders.
The director (lay or clergy) will be amenable to the bishop, in consultation with the Connectional Ministries Personnel Committee.

In partnership with the Bishop and Cabinet and the elected leadership of the conference, the Director of the Connectional Ministries shall have the following primary responsibilities:

  • To serve as steward of the mission and vision of the Tennessee Conference, including the clarification, interpretation and embodiment of the vision.
  • To serve as leader of the continuing process of transformation and renewal necessary for the conference to be faithful to our Christian identity in the changing world.
  • To ensure alignment of conference resources such as staff, finances, and programs to its mission and vision based on measurable outcomes.
  • Coordinate, design, and maintain effective systems that enable the Tennessee Conference transition from a centralized model of Conference leadership to a distributive/decentralized model.
  • To ensure a streamline connection in accordance to the conference’s mission and vision among local churches, district, conference and general church.
The Director shall serve as an officer of the conference and shall sit with the Cabinet when the Cabinet considers matters relating to coordination, implementation, or administration of the conference program, and other matters as the cabinet and Director may determine. 

  • General administrative oversight and support of the Connectional Ministries.
  • Representative participation in relevant jurisdictional and general church committees, programs, associations and initiatives.
  • Managerial oversight of the Annual Conference session in collaboration with the Bishop.
Specific Job Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Excellent Knowledge of United Methodist polity, doctrine, and systems.
  • Evidence of spiritual maturity.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in complex environment of competing goals and deadlines, frequently with limited or shared resources; must be able to quickly and accurately prioritize and exercise good follow-through; able to self-direct and function autonomously as required.
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence in and sensitivity to a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.
  • Leadership skills, including:
    • Demonstrating healthy emotional intelligence and a commitment to lifelong learning
    • Visioning and long-range planning
    • Tracking multiple projects and work flows
    • Developing healthy teams that achieve measurable outcomes based on organizational goals
    • Ability to analyze trends and systemic problems in their infancy and develop innovative team based solutions.
    • Ability to manage change in highly complex systems
  • Above average competency with technology and mainstream applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, website, and email)
  • Must be able and willing to travel regionally and nationally.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Five year’s relevant experience in faith-based community or not-for-profit management and leadership preferred.
  • Monitoring, interpreting and implementing United Methodist polity and policy
  • Supervising employees
  • Developing and managing projects and events
  • Working in teams and with volunteers
  • Developing and managing budgets
