Organist – Part time
Grace United Methodist Church of St Augustine, Florida is seeking a part-time Organist to begin by or before January 1, 2017. The Organist will be responsible for providing music for regular traditional Sunday services, special church services (including first right of refusal for weddings and funerals), accompaniment for soloists, guest musicians, and music events, in addition to working directly with the Director of Music, as well as ministerial and other church staff to support and complement the music ministry of the church within the Methodist musical heritage and the diverse musical traditions of our community.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished organist and accompanist with experience playing in liturgical churches and committed to contributing to the life of the church with ambition, creativity, enthusiasm, joy, and a pastoral care for the congregants of the church. He or she will be expected to work closely with the Director of Music, as well as other staff in contributing to activities associated with running a music program in an active church community.
Grace is a faithful Christian community who worships in an historical building dating to 1885. Our doors and hearts are open to all who visit. The music program at Grace is vibrant and growing, and is a vital part of the church community. The organist is an essential part of the ministry of the choirs, musicians, soloists, and the congregation.
Service Times: Sunday Morning 7:45 am and 11:00 am services. Grace offers a Contemporary Worship Service at 9:15, and music is provided by our Praise Team. Other services are scheduled well in advance and will be communicated in a timely manner.
Compensation: Compensation is competitive and in line with AGO standards. The organist shall be permitted to use the facilities of the institution (organs and pianos) for private teaching at rates to be set by the organist. Additional compensation, based on AGO guidelines, is provided for playing for weddings and funerals.
Our primary instruments:
Colby/Walker Custom Digital Organ
This is the main instrument used in worship. Three manuals, 70 rank, five divisions, and a MIDI interface. Installed in 2004. Full specifications are available upon request.
Kawai Grand Piano
This is a GS-70 Semi Concert Grand (7’5”) with an Ebony cabinet, c. 1986. It is very fine condition with a beautiful tone, and is well maintained.
Prerequisites: Candidate must demonstrate knowledge and skill in hymn playing, service music, accompaniment of choral anthems as well as vocal and instrumental soloists, and organ repertoire appropriate for church services. The candidate must also must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
--Under the direction of the Director of Music, play the organ and/or piano for regularly scheduled traditional services including a prelude, postlude, hymns, choral accompaniments and incidental music as requested.
--Play the organ and/or piano at weekly choir rehearsals (September through May), as well as special rehearsals with adequate prior notice by the Director of Music in support of usual or special worship events.
--Play the organ and/or piano for special worship events, including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter, as mutually agreed upon with the Director of Music and ministerial staff.
--Recommend preludes, postludes, special music, or hymns as requested by the Director of Music or ministerial staff.
--Play (or oversee the use of) the organ and other church instruments for weddings and funerals held in the church.
--Oversee care and maintenance of the organ and other church instruments within budgetary limits.
--Recommend substitute and guest musicians to the Director of Music as appropriate when arranging absences.
