Dr. Dan Johnson, who retired as senior pastor of Trinity UMC in Gainesville this year, has moved from being a Board member of the Moscow Theological Seminary to being vice president of Advancement for MTS this month. MTS is our United Methodist Seminary to Eurasia.
With a Ph. D in Biblical Studies from Princeton Theological Seminary, Dan Johnson has combined an active pastoral ministry and seminary teaching, having taught at West Africa Theological Seminary and our United Methodist Theological Seminary in Moscow, Russia (with a week of teaching at their site in Kiev, Ukraine). This has led to Dan's being invited to serve on the Board of MTS, his identifying one of his gifted students (Olga) as a possible Dean for the seminary to support his friend, Sergei Nikolaev, the President of MTS (who was in the first graduating class and received his Ph.D from Perkins/SMU). For the past three years Trinity UMC, Gainesville, has been providing the financial support for Olga.
Dan believes in the mission of MTS, which is the Spiritual Center for the United Methodist movement in Eurasia, a movement that has grown from one church after the fall of communism to 121 churches. The current class has 90 students! The seminary also provides ongoing support for the pastors out in the field which covers seven time zones!
As Dan takes up his new responsibilities as vice president of Advancement for the seminary, he will look to invite churches in the Florida Conference to join in supporting this vital mission of the United Methodist Church. Bishop Carter is on the Advisory Board of the Moscow Theological Seminary.
