A team of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, sponsored by the Florida Conference, is being organized to complete the construction of a 3-part sanitation project in a refugee zone in the Northern Region of Haiti. The UMVIM team will be working alongside the Haitian Methodists and local Haitian carpenters, masons and interpreters. Helpful skills include carpentry, masonry, plumbing and electrical. Women are, of course, welcome!
A deep, 125+' well has already been drilled, and work begun to construct a 15'x15' shower house (cinder block, rendered smooth, and 2"x4" wooden rafters and a tin roof, doors added...as well as a 200 gal., elevated/gravity flow PVC water tank...plumbing to include inflow pipes and valves to the tank and shower head/faucets/handles, drains, the laying of a proper greywater catch-basin, and the installation of the solar panel / battery / generator power system).
This facility will be available for community use for the thousands of nearby residents...and will be the first of many, hopefully, to be built in this rural area suffering from severe over-crowding by those who have emigrated out of the decimated Port-au-Prince area, struggling with poor, mountain soil, and few clean water resources. This is a key effort to stop the spread of Cholera & other water-borne diseases.
The team will travel to Haiti Friday, 17 August -- Saturday, 25 August, 2012, likely flying out of either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami Airports, via IBC Airways directly into Cap-Haitien Airport.
Food and Housing will be at the Cap-Haitien Methodist Manse / Guest House.
The cost per person is $1,400. Budget for each trip includes airfare, lodging, ground transportation, meals, medical insurance, and registration. A limited number of partial scholarships are available. Please click here to learn more. For a scholarship application, click here.
