The 2004 Florida Annual Conference Event is unique one, for several
reasons. It is being held outside Lakeland for the first time in many
years. Previously, it was held at United Methodist-related Florida
Southern College (FSC) and in more recent years at the Lakeland Center,
with FSC providing housing and meal support for delegates.
This year, Florida United Methodists are spending time on the campus of
Florida's other denominationally-related school, Bethune-Cookman College.
The plenary sessions are being held in Bethune-Cookman's new Performing
Arts Center.
The event is also occurring over a weekend, a change that has allowed
churches to send non-traditional delegates-people who have not been able
to attend in the past because the event took place during the week.
This year's theme is "A Light to the Nations," honoring Eastern Angolan
Bishop José Quipungo's visit to the conference. It also focuses the
conference on its call to servant ministry. The scriptural basis for the
theme is Isaiah 42:1-4; 49:1-6; 50:4-11; and 52:13-53:12.
